Let's Talk Greek

In this episode we're talking about Τσικνοπέμπτη, the origin and traditions around this full of meet and parties in Greece.

E: Λοιπόν, τι κάνεις για Τσικνοπέμπτη φέτος; /So, what are you doing for Tsiknopempti this year?
D: Χαμός! Θα πάμε σε ένα σπίτι φίλων. Θα ψήνουμε από το μεσημέρι. Εσύ; /Crazy stuff! We’re going to some friends’ house. We’ll be grilling from noon. You?
E: Κλασικά… οικογενειακό τραπέζι και μετά βόλτα στο κέντρο. Θα έχει πάρτι στους δρόμους από το πρωί! /The usual… family lunch and then a walk downtown. There will be street parties starting in the morning!
D: Α ωραία! Θα ντυθείς; /Oh nice! Are you going to dress up?
E:Εννοείται! Σκέφτομαι να ντυθώ κάτι αστείο… ίσως ντίσκο από τα ’80s. Εσύ; /Of course! I’m thinking of wearing something funny… maybe disco from the ’80s. You?
D: Εγώ λέω να ντυθώ παιδί των λουλουδιών, χίπισσα ξέρεις. Το έχω κάθε χρόνο αυτό. Απλό, αλλά πιάνει! /I’m thinking of dressing up as a flower child, you know, a hippie. I do that every year. Simple, but it works!
Ε: Α Καλά, κλασικό! Τουλάχιστον θα φας καλά;? /Ah, classic! At least you’ll eat well, right?
Δ: Θα γίνει υπερπαραγωγή. Σουβλάκια, λουκάνικα, μπριζόλες… θα μυρίσει όλη η γειτονιά. /It’s going to be huge. Souvlaki, sausages, steaks… the whole neighborhood will smell it.
Ε: Έτσι πρέπει! Μια φορά τον χρόνο γίνονται αυτά. Τσικνοπέμπτη χωρίς τσίκνα δεν γίνεται!/ That’s how it should be! It only happens once a year. Tsiknopempti without the smell of grilled meat isn’t Tsiknopempti!
Δ: Σωστό! Άντε, καλές προετοιμασίες και καλή μας όρεξη! /True! Well then, happy preparations and enjoy your meal!

In this episode we look at compound words with the word -φοβία (-phobia) as their second component.
The word φοβία comes from φόβος, which means fear. So, all the words we’ll see today describe having a fear of something, and that “something” is defined by the first part of each word.
The first word we’ll look at is υψοφοβία, from the words ύψος meaning height and φοβία. So, υψοφοβία means the fear of heights.
In English, we use the word acrophobia, which also exists in Greek as ακροφοβία.
Next, we have αγοραφοβία, from the words αγορά, which in this case means public space and not market, and φοβία. Just like in English, agoraphobia, it refers to the fear of open or crowded places.
Then we have κλειστοφοβία, from κλειστός, meaning closed, and φοβία, which means the fear of confined or enclosed spaces. The English word is claustrophobia, where the first component comes from the Latin claustrum and the Greek φοβία.
Our next word is αρρωστοφοβία, from άρρωστος, meaning sick, and φοβία. This describes the fear of getting sick.
In English, the equivalent term is nosophobia, from νόσος, the ancient Greek word for illness or disease, and phobia. Although this term exists in English, it’s mostly used in medical contexts. In everyday language, we usually say fear of getting sick or health anxiety.

In this episode we will talk about the prepositions in Greek, προθέσεις, and how we use them. You'll hear their various meanings and how that changes depending on context.

D: Ισχύει το σινεμά που κλείσαμε για την Παρασκευή; /Are we still going to the movie we booked for Friday?
E: Ναι, εννοείται! Με τι θα πας; /Yes, of course! How are you going to get there?
D: Έλεγα να πάω με αμάξι. Θέλεις να περάσω να σε πάρω; /I was thinking of going by car. Do you want me to come pick you up?
E: Καλή ιδέα, σκεφτόμουν να πήγαινα με μετρό, αλλά καλύτερα να πάμε μαζί. /Good idea. I was thinking of taking the metro, but it’s better if we go together.
D: Κανένα πρόβλημα. Εγώ θα είμαι στο κέντρο από το απόγευμα για μια δουλειά, άρα μπορεί να έρθω λίγο νωρίτερα. /No problem. I’ll be downtown from the afternoon for something I need to do, so I might come a bit earlier.
E: Τι ώρα θα είσαι σε μένα; /What time will you be at my place?
D: Νομίζω ότι από εκεί που θα είμαι μέχρι το σπίτι σου είναι περίπου 20 με 30 λεπτά. Επομένως υπολογίζω γύρω στις 7 να είμαι εκεί. Πόση ώρα είναι το σινεμά από το σπίτι σου; /I think from where I’ll be to your place it’s about 20 to 30 minutes. So I’m estimating I’ll be there around 7. How long does it take from your place to the cinema?
E: Δεν είναι πολύ, κανένα 10λεπτο με τέταρτο το πολύ! /Not long at all, about 10 to 15 minutes at most!
D: Σούπερ! Θα είμαστε στην ώρα μας. 7 και μισή δεν είναι η προβολή; /Perfect! We’ll be on time. The screening is at 7:30, right?
E: Ναι, και είναι μεγάλη ταινία. Στις 10 τελειώνει. Θέλεις να πάμε για φαΐ ή ποτό μετά; /Yes, and it’s a long movie. It ends at 10. Do you want to go for food or a drink afterward? 
D: Φυσικά! Να πούμε τα νέα μας και να σχολιάσουμε και την ταινία. /Of course! We can catch up and comment on the movie too.
E: Επιβάλλεται! Έχει ένα καινούριο μαγαζί κοντά στο σινεμά, θα μπορούμε να πάμε με τα πόδια. /Definitely! There’s a new place near the cinema—we can walk there.
D: Ακόμα καλύτερα. Ωραία, άρα όταν θα ξεκινάω από το κέντρο θα σε πάρω τηλέφωνο. /Even better. Great, then I’ll call you when I’m leaving downtown.
E: Τέλεια! Θα είμαι έτοιμη! /Perfect! I’ll be ready!

In this episode we'll be looking at phrases and vocabulary you can use or see on an app, while booking a hotel room in Greece.

D: Έλα τι κάνεις; Σε πήρα να κλείσουμε το ξενοδοχείο που λέγαμε για το τριήμερο στο βουνό. /Hey! How are you? I’m calling so we can book the hotel we were talking about for the long weekend in the mountains.
E: Πάνω στην ώρα, αυτό κοιτούσα τώρα στην εφαρμογή. Οι ημερομηνίες 5-7 Φεβρουαρίου μας βολεύουν όλους έτσι; /Perfect timing! I was just checking it on the app. Are the dates February 5-7 convenient for everyone?
D: Ναι./Yes.
E: Ωραία. Κοίταξα σε ένα αλλά δεν είχε διαθεσιμότητα λόγω αυξημένης ζήτησης των ημερών. Τώρα βλέπω ένα άλλο που μου φαίνεται καλύτερο! Έχει και πρωινό μέσα στην τιμή. /Great. I checked one hotel, but it didn’t have availability because of high demand during those days. Now I’m looking at another one that seems even better! Breakfast is included in the price. 
D: Σούπερ. Κλείσε σε αυτό! Για εμάς βάλε ένα δίκλινο. /Awesome. Book that one! For us, put down one double room.
E: Ωραία! Και για εμάς θα βάλω ένα τρίκλινο με ένα μονό και ένα διπλό κρεβάτι αλλά και μία κούνια. /Perfect! And for us, I’ll book a triple room with one single bed, one double bed, and a baby crib as well. 
D: Πολύ ωραία. Πρέπει να πληρώσουμε τώρα ή μπορούμε να κάνουμε την κράτηση και να πληρώσουμε εκεί./ Sounds great. Do we have to pay now, or can we make the reservation and pay there?
E: Πρέπει να βάλουμε έστω μία προκαταβολή και μετά αν θέλουμε πληρώνουμε τα υπόλοιπα με κάρτα ή και με μετρητά εκεί. /We need to pay at least a deposit, and then if we want, we can pay the rest there by card or cash.
D: Ίσως καλύτερα τα υπόλοιπα εκεί, μήπως χρειαστεί να το ακυρώσουμε. /Maybe it’s better to pay the rest there, in case we need to cancel.
Ε: Καλά λες. Λοιπόν το δίκλινο με πρωινό είναι 70 ευρώ το βράδυ και το τρίκλινο είναι 80 ευρώ το βράδυ. /You’re right. So, the double room with breakfast is €70 per night, and the triple room is €80 per night.
D: Η προκαταβολή πόσο είναι; /How much is the deposit?
Ε: Είναι 150 ευρώ. /It’s €150.
D: Μια χαρά! Μήπως έχει και βραδινό; /That’s fine! Does it also have dinner?
Ε: Έχει αλλά είναι με επιπλέον χρέωση και από ό,τι βλέπω το πληρώνεις εκεί στο τέλος της διαμονής σου. /Yes, but it’s at an extra cost, and from what I see, you pay for it at the end of your stay.
D: Ωραία, ας το έχουμε και αυτό στο μυαλό μας. /Okay, let’s keep that in mind.
Ε: Πάρτε και κανένα μαγιό μαζί σας, από ό,τι βλέπω έχει και εσωτερική θερμαινόμενη πισίνα!!! /Bring your swimsuits too — apparently there’s a heated indoor pool!
D: Ό,τι πρεπει με το κρύο! Σίγουρα θα πάρουμε τότε! /Perfect with this cold weather! We’ll definitely bring them then!

In this episode we'll be looking at the differences Imperfect and Simple Past have in Greek. We'll explain how and when we use them in everyday Greek conversations.

Ε: Άντε πού είσαι; Σε έπαιρνα το σαββατοκύριακο αλλά δεν απαντούσες. /Hey, where have you been? I was calling you over the weekend but you weren’t answering.
D: Ναι, συγγνώμη, ήμουν έξω όλη μέρα το Σάββατο. Το πρωί έτρεχα για δουλειές και μετά βρέθηκα με κάτι φίλους και τελικά γύρισα αργά το βράδυ. /Yeah, sorry, I was out all day on Saturday. In the morning I was running errands, then I met up with some friends, and I ended up getting back late at night.
E: Α, γι’ αυτό. Πώς πέρασες; /Ah, that’s why. How was it?
D: Τέλεια! Είχα καιρό να βγω και το ευχαριστήθηκα! Εσύ τι έκανες το Σαββατοκύριακο; / Great! I hadn’t gone out in a while and I really enjoyed it! What did you do over the weekend?
E: Εγώ έκατσα σπίτι το Σάββατο, γιατί ήμουν πολύ κουρασμένη από όλη την εβδομάδα. Ε, το πρωί διάβασα λίγο, το μεσημέρι μαγείρεψα και μετά έβλεπα σειρές. Αλλά την Κυριακή το πρωί πρόλαβα και πήγα για έναν καφέ πριν βρέξει. /I stayed home on Saturday because I was very tired from the whole week. In the morning I read a bit, at noon I cooked, and then I watched series. But on Sunday morning I managed to go out for a coffee before it rained.
D: Μα χαρά! Κι εγώ αρχικά σκεφτόμουν να μείνω μέσα, αλλά άλλαξα γνώμη. /Nice! I was initially thinking of staying in too, but I changed my mind. 
E: Καλά έκανες! Την Κυριακή πήγες πουθενά; /You did well! Did you go anywhere on Sunday?
D: Όχι, επειδή έβρεχε αλλά ήθελα να χαλαρώσω κιόλας  λίγο πριν αρχίσει η εβδομάδα. / No, because it was raining, and I also wanted to relax a bit before the week started.
E: Σωστά. Δούλευες σήμερα; /Right. Were you working today?
D: Ναι, δούλευα το πρωί και γύρισα πριν λίγο σπίτι./Yes, I was working in the morning and got home a little while ago.
E: Ωραία, γιατί σκεφτόμουν να βρισκόμασταν αφού δεν ειδωθήκαμε μέσα στο ΣΚ. /Great, because I was thinking we could meet since we didn’t see each other over the weekend.
D: Καλή ιδέα! Έναν απογευματινό καφέ θα τον ήθελα! /Good idea! I’d love an afternoon coffee!
E: Τέλεια,  θα περάσω να σε πάρω στις 6. Είναι καλά; /Perfect, I’ll come by to pick you up at 6. Is that okay?
D: Θα είμαι έτοιμη! Τα λέμε τότε. /I’ll be ready! See you then.
