S4E10: Etymology: Holiday vocabulary in Greek

    18/12/2025 | 5 mins.

In this episode we will talk about holiday related vocabulary and the roots of these words. We will help you understand where they come from and how they got the meaning they have now."So first we’ll look at the word Ī§ĻĪ¹ĻƒĻ„ĪæĻĪ³ĪµĪ½Ī½Ī± = Christmas, which is derived from the words Ī§ĻĪ¹ĻƒĻ„ĻŒĻ‚ = Christ και γέννα (γέννηση) = birth, meaning Ī· γέννηση του Ī§ĻĪ¹ĻƒĻ„ĪæĻ = the birth of Christ.Ā Then we have Πρωτοχρονιά = New Year’s Day, which is also a compound word and is derived from the words Ļ€ĻĻŽĻ„ĪæĻ‚ = first και χρονιά = year, meaning Ī— Ļ€ĻĻŽĻ„Ī· μέρα του Ļ‡ĻĻŒĪ½ĪæĻ… = the first day of the year.Ā And the third holiday we celebrate in Greece during this season is "Ī˜ĪµĪæĻ†Ī¬Ī½ĪµĪ¹Ī±" = Epiphany, which is formed by the words Ī˜ĪµĻŒĻ‚ = God και φαίνομαι = to appear. Ī˜ĪµĪæĻ†Ī¬Ī½ĪµĪ¹Ī± is the day that commemorates the manifestation of the Holy Trinity during the baptism of Jesus. The English word Epiphany is also of Greek origin, coming from επιφάνεια which means ā€˜appearance’ or ā€˜manifestation’. So these were the three big holidays we include in what we call ĪµĪæĻĻ„Ī±ĻƒĻ„Ī¹ĪŗĪ® περίοΓος = festive season.Ā Now looking into some other words, we have of course "μελομακάρονα" which doesn’t have a translation in English, but they’re the honey dipped cookies, and the word comes from μέλι = honey και μακαρία = a small offering bread.Ā And then we have some words that are not compound, like:ĻƒĻ„ĪæĪ»ĪÆĪ“Ī¹ = ornament, decoration from the verb ĻƒĻ„ĪæĪ»ĪÆĪ¶Ļ‰ = to decorateĀ Ī“ĻŽĻĪæ = the present from the verb Γίνω = to give, which actually in Greek Ī“ĻŽĻĪæ is an object or gesture offered without expecting anything in return.έθιμο = tradition/ custom, comes from the ancient έθος = habit and is a customary practice of a people or a group.άγγελος = angel. And yes, the English word ā€˜angel’ comes from the ancient Greek άγγελος, which means Ī±Ī³Ī³ĪµĪ»Ī¹Ī±Ļ†ĻŒĻĪæĻ‚ = the messenger giving the meaning messenger of God and entered English through Latin."

When we started our online Greek school, Greek Language Experts, we noticed there weren't many options for students to practice listening. So, we decided to create this podcast. Tune in every Thursday for a fresh episode featuring Emily and Danai engaging in Greek dialogue on diverse topics. Our episodes cater to beginner and intermediate learners, as well as anyone seeking to refine their language skills. Join us as we embark on this linguistic journey together!
