Local Private Water Group Schemes among a number identified as having E.coli failures
The Environmental Protection Agency says there's an urgent need for mandatory registration of private drinking water supplies. A number of local private group schemes have been identified as having E coli failures in 2024, while some have unresolved issues from 2023. The schemes mentioned in the latest report include those at Carrowdargney, Keelouges, Castlegrange, Gurteen Clonmore and Liskeavy. It's raising concerns that many private supplies are not registered - despite serving schools, nursing homes, sports clubs and self-catering accommodation. The EPA's Noel Byrne is Programme Manager of the Drinking Water and Wastewater Enforcement team - he says everyone has a right to safe drinking water, and supplies that aren't registered, aren't being monitored:

Over €16 million allocated to local group water schemes
Over 16 million euro has been allocated to group water schemes to improve services not managed by Uisce Eireann in the north west. The Multi-annual Rural Water Programme has given funding to around 63,000 households nationally who get their water supplies by other means - including private wells. Applications have been assessed from local authorities for projects to improve drinking water quality, source protection, leakage reduction, and provide infrastructure upgrades. Among those included in the funding are the Castlebaldwin Group Water Scheme, Laghey Bar, Glencoagh, Rossnowlagh and Legan. Local Senator Manus Boyle feels it’s a timely boost for the communities in question:
