Most people remember their childhood homes with warmth. When he thinks about his, what comes back isn’t nostalgia—it’s vigilance.
The house had always felt occupied. Not crowded. Not noisy. Just aware. As a child, his fear took the shape of a shadow that stood in the corner of his bedroom night after night, watching without moving. As he grew older, that fear followed him into waking life—into hallways no one liked to walk through, rooms that felt wrong for no clear reason.
When his family life became tense, the house responded. When illness arrived, it escalated. And when grief took root, the activity became physical—objects moving with intention, voices mimicking loved ones, footsteps climbing stairs no one could walk anymore.

Chris had never set foot in his grandparents’ apartment before—but the moment he walked in, something felt wrong. Not unfamiliar. Known. The hallway stretched exactly where he expected it to. The rooms were where they should be. It was as if he’d been there already… just not in this life.
