Inquiry with Kelly Chase

After years immersed in the deep end of ufology, one question has proven impossible to shake: how is it that certain factions of the intelligence community—people who possess more evidence than most that consciousness survives death, that the soul is real, and that we are more than our physical bodies—so consistently engage in profound acts of moral evil?

This Field Notes episode explores the contradiction at the heart of anomalous research: the same fundamental knowledge about non-material reality that tends to moralize everyday experiencers, deepening their compassion, ethical sensitivity, and sense of consequence, appears to have the opposite effect in certain institutionalized contexts. Every action presupposes a theory of reality. And when someone is willing to deceive, coerce, and harm others in service of a greater purpose, that willingness is not an operational detail. It's a theological commitment.

What kind of belief system allows someone to acknowledge the reality of the soul while treating human beings as expendable? What does it tell us about the UFO coverup that the people closest to the truth appear to have constructed a secret theology that quietly authorizes evil?
