Traditional Thomists are normally unfriendly to Henri De Lubac, but today’s guest, Fr. Cajetan Cuddy points out that Thomists are very indebted to De Lubac and should join him on the battlefield.  

Fr. Cajetan Cuddy is a Dominican priest, scholar, and Youtuber who recently presented at the De Lubac conference hosted by the John Paul II Institute on Marriage and the Family. He joins us today to talk about De Lubac and his critical insight into the rise of constructive atheism. Fr. Cuddy and Ben Eriksen talk about De Lubac’s response to this new threat to the human person. They also discuss the tendency of academics and intellectuals to focus too exclusively on the academic end of writing and researching while ignoring the search for truth and God who is much more than an intellectual principle. Their conversation not only provides insights into our modern culture but also demonstrates the crucial overlap between intellectual inquiry and one’s lived experience.

On March 2, 2011, Shahbaz Bhatti a devout Catholic and Pakistani politician was murdered by the Taliban. But his life and legacy are much greater than his passing from this world because he is a hero that all of us should look up to and imitate.

In this episode, we are joined by three guests. Knox Thames who is a personal friend of Shahbaz and his family and served as the State Department Special Advisor for Religious Minorities under both President Obama and President Trump. His personal account of Shahbaz’s character and work form the basis of the graphic novel “Blood and Water” which retells the life and witness of this great man.

We are also joined by the writer (Matt Yocum) and illustrator (Jordan Holt) of “Blood and Water.” Matt has worked on several projects for Marvel comics and beautifully tells the story of Shahbaz from his childhood until after his death. Jordan also speaks about the creative process and how he immersed himself in the Pakistani culture in order to present it both accurately and artistically.

Dr. Thomas Harmon teaches at the University of St. Thomas, and he joins Mark Brumley to talk about the recent endowment given to the university to establish a new initiative aimed at developing good Catholic citizens. He and Mark also focus on the potential usefulness and challenges of artificial intelligence and what it means to be a good Catholic in America.

Finally, Jon Voight promotes Pope St. John Paul II as a model particularly for young people as we face Communism and other great evils in our own time.
