As has become customary, Celtic have once again taken deadline day right
down to the wire, leaving supporters anxiously awaiting confirmation of the
club’s January business.

Martin O’Neill has already hinted that late arrivals are on the cards, so now it’s a case of trusting his judgement - alongside Shaun Maloney - and hoping any final additions can give the squad the lift it needs in the push for a fifth consecutive title.

While much of the spotlight has been on potential incomings, there’s been late drama on the outgoing front too. Nottingham Forest have seen a last-ditch attempt to lure Arne Engels away from Parkhead knocked back, with a bid in the region of £25 million firmly rejected.

Turning down an offer that would have doubled the outlay on the club’s record signing is a bold stance, but hopefully one that pays dividends as Engels and his teammates look to finish the season with silverware.

In exactly one week’s time we’ll know just how much ambition the Celtic board have for this season.

We’ll know just how willing they’ve been to back returning hero Martin O’Neill.

And we’ll know just how willing they are to show the fans that they should be taken seriously as a genuinely progressive football club.

Because of recent, evidence of this has been scarce and once again the pressure is on this Celtic board to deliver.

Since returning once again as Interim Manager, Martin O’Neill has guided Celtic to three wins from three. However, despite those result, there is absolutely no escaping the fact that reinforcements are needed - and urgently - if success is to follow between now and the end of the season.

A brilliant manager he may be, but a magician he is not.

That reality comes into even sharper focus this week, with two pivotal fixtures of very different kinds on the horizon.

First comes the midweek trip to Italy to face Bologna in Europa League action, followed by Sunday’s visit to Tynecastle - a fixture many will regard as a must-win against the league leaders.

Should O’Neill manage to grind out two big results, it would represent a huge step in the right direction.

Let's just hope the steps he has to take beyond that are with a couple of extra options at his disposal in the first-team squad.
