Welcome to Weepies, pod pals, the movie podcast for people who love to ugly cry about pretend stuff because it beats screaming into a pillow when life gets too ...
CONTENT WARNING: There is discussion of sexual assault and violence in this episode.
Who knew Green Card was a weepy? For a teenage Gabrielle Rumble it certainly was, and remained that way well into her twenties. Will it still have the same weepy qualities with 2022 specs on?
This week we look at the classic Peter Weir comedy, starring a post-partum Andie McDowell and Gerard Depardieu in his first role in an American film, launching him to international stardom.
Gabrielle Rumble is the Content Director at ABC Canberra, and one of the favourite friends of Kim and Melanie.

Stepmom (With Ebony Bennett)
We've managed to bring one of the Greatest Movie Weepers Of All Time into the podcast - the excellent Ebony Bennett. In real life, Ebony is the Deputy Director of the think tank The Australia Institute and the host of Follow The Money podcast.
Ebony nominated Stepmom as it's her go-to cry movie. Julia Roberts plays the title role for two young children called Ben and Anna - she's young and hip, while Susan Sarandon plays the OG mom. The film navigates them all trying to be a family, while Ed Harris does his best in the background to honour his old life and serve his new.

Anne of Green Gables (With Mandy Hose)
When the orphan Anne Shirley came to Green Gables, a lot of lives were changed and you've never met a character who got into more scrapes and touched more hearts.
Mandy Hose is the co-host of one of our favourite podcasts, Too Peas in a Podcast, and since the 1980s, she's been Anne-obsessed. She's even been to Prince Edward Island.
How does Anne of Green Gables hold up in a 2022 setting? Does it still bring the tears, and why?

Brief Encounter (With Rae Earl)
Yet again, we're weeping to a film about two lonely people having an affair. It's the film that Guardian called the Number 1 Romantic Film Of All Time, and has been recommended to us by the brilliant author and screenwriter Rae Earl.
Brief Encounter is a 1945 British classic, written by Noel Coward, that tells the story of a brief affair between housewife Laura Jessen and Doctor Alec Harvey, who meet at a train station.
This is an illuminating discussion on Brits and crying, and class. Don't miss this chat, even if you've not seen the movie. You'll want to after listening to this.

About Time
Gosh, but About Time is a complicated Weepy.
It's meant to be a rom com, but Mel & Kim wish it was just about a father and son who can time travel (which is where the heart and tears of this story come from).
Written and directed by Richard Curtis in 2013, it was mostly critically smashed, but remains in many hearts because of the howling it produces.

Welcome to Weepies, pod pals, the movie podcast for people who love to ugly cry about pretend stuff because it beats screaming into a pillow when life gets too real.
Hosts Melanie Tait (veteran cryer) and Kim Lester (reluctant cryer) from A Country Podcast take their friendship to the next level by sharing their favourite weepy movies with each other and inviting their most emotionally intelligent friends to do the same.
In the words of CC Bloom's mum Leona, 'It'll keep you honest' or as Kim/Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own would say 'There's no crying in baseball!'
