Ep. 1 – The End of Decision: who decides, and who pays the price?

    31/10/2026 | 8 mins.
In 2023, the Irish parliament spent €336,000 on a bicycle shelter. Who decided? Probably nobody – and that is the problem.
In this first, solo episode, Roland Monsegu sets out the argument of his book The End of Decision: modern politics hasn't failed because of bad people or bad ideas, but because we replaced judgement with management. Decisions now pass through so many layers – a political mille-feuille – that nobody really decides, and nobody pays the price when things go wrong.
With the National Children's Hospital in Dublin and the Lower Thames Crossing in England as examples, he explains the two kinds of checks we keep confusing, and why the answer is "fewer brakes on acting, strong brakes on staying".
