I was amazed to see a post from the USF Tampa residency program that showed ALL of their PGY2 residents successfully complete the 10-10-10 challenge. This means throwing 10 sutures of 10-0 nylon in 10 minutes in the wet-lab. This is not easy and takes considerable practice. Of the residents who trained at UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute during the 20+ years that I was professor there, only a small percent succeeded in this challenge. Their fearless leader in the wet-lab is Dr Mark Hankins who also attends them at the USF Tampa James A. Haley VA Hospital. At a recent meeting, I was really amazed at the complexity of anterior segment cases that Dr David Crandall presented. He and his team of 9 colleagues run the glaucoma service and fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. That is a very large hospital and health system that does a very large volume of ophthalmic surgeries across all subspecialities and treats 55,000 patients per year. Dr Crandall gives great pearls about these complex surgical cases and we also discuss global outreach and the important topic of sustainability.
