The real world is a different place than what you experienced during your ophthalmology training and navigating this new frontier can be challenging. Our guest today is Dr Lisa Nijm who is both an ophthalmologist and an attorney who has started the Real World Ophthalmology endeavor to help. This encompasses the website, a podcast, social media pages, online webinars, in-person live events and more. Truly remarkable. She also advises young ophthalmologists about negotiating during the job hunting process and runs the Women in Ophthalmology program.

89: CataractCoach Podcast 89: Edward Holland MD
Severe damage to the ocular surface can mean near total loss of vision for patients and these complex injuries require specialized care for rehabilitation. Our guest surgeon is Prof. Edward Holland MD who has developed techniques such as the Cincinnati procedure for Ocular Surface Transplantation and has now started the Holland Foundation For Sight to establish multiple centers of excellence across the USA (and eventually internationally) to teach other ophthalmologists these techniques. There are estimated to be more than 100,000 patients in the USA alone who could benefit from this type of anterior segment reconstruction. At the end of this podcast we have more information about the foundation and then tomorrow's CataractCoach video will showcase these surgical techniques in detail.

88: CataractCoach Podcast 88: Naren Shetty MD
Building a world-class eye institute and research laboratory is a large task that takes decades to accomplish. Our guest surgeon Dr Naren Shetty and his family have built Narayana Nethralaya (which literally means temple of the eye) in Bangalore, India. I had a chance to visit this amazing institution and spend time learning about the incredible research, including basic science, clinical, and computational. In this podcast we talk about what it takes to achieve this and how our practices will change in the near future with the addition of new technologies that have come from the research laboratory.
