D&D Legends and Lore

None can win the war with death, but losing the war does not mean the combatants have seen their last battle. Warriors who wish to fight beyond the limitations of flesh and blood can seek a forbidden way to steal their souls from fate.

The cost of this immortality is death, but the fearless few who pay this price become death’s allies. Indeed, death bestows power upon them. Their fleshless bones clad in skins of armor, their brittle fingers clasping weapons with a grip of iron, these knights of death take command of their souls and their destinies. When they charge from the shadowy afterlife into the lands of the living, death knights ride to wage war upon life itself.

The horrors the Abyss disgorges are without number, and no limit restricts the disquieting forms that its spawn, demons, can take. Easily the most disgusting master to claim dominion over the tainted host is the creature known as Juiblex, He Who Slithers, the Unnameable One, Glistener, Indescribable Darkness, and Slick of Foulest Humors.

In the sinister land of Thay, scheming mages called Red Wizards dominate a society steeped in magic and deceit. Those without magical or economic power are at the mercy of these fascist mages, who harshly punish any who defy them. The truth is that the Red Wizards are a threat to all of Faerun, held back by the Simbul and Rashemen and their own disorganization. Those who know Thay realize that it is the Red Wizards' own lack of a coherent structure and their refusal to combine forces that keeps them from conquering the rest of Toril.

But there is one among them who wishes to change this. Thay is also infamous as the home of Szass Tam, the dread lich who seeks to rule this nation and turn those who oppose him into undead minions.
