This week, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander — a loyal ally of accused murderer Alex Murdaugh — is under State Grand Jury investigation on accusations that he transported the Murdaugh murder weapons and bloody clothing to his police station after Alex's wife and son were killed on June 7, 2021. For years, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have reported on Alexander's ties to Murdaugh — and huge questions have existed from the start about his movements that night and why he was at the murder scene at all.

Alex's little brother tried to answer those questions at the 2023 trial, but only added to the confusion.

While it's encouraging that SLED and the Attorney General's Office are finally investigating, Mandy and Liz smell something fishy. Why is this leaking now? In her official answer to the ODC, Judge Carmen Mullen says she was just a good citizen worried about a mentally ill man's safety. In Part Two of True Sunlight #166, Investigative Journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell play the recording from that December 2017 night in Port Royal Plantation and let her own words do the talking.

Mullen tells deputies she has sentenced Ernie "the Attorney" before. She questions whether he has a lease and says she told the homeowner to press charges, then introduces herself to that homeowner… for the first time…? She says "you gotta get rid of him" and asks to "find some charges." According to the police report, she also suggests she could sign the warrant herself.

We also dig into the threat-filled lawsuit against Ernie that Mullen dismissed months earlier, and a Hilton Head real estate agent named Moose Rini whose name keeps coming up in police reports, trial transcripts, and sentencing memos.

In part one of this two-part episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell finally get an answer to the question they've asked for years: when will South Carolina's Office of Disciplinary Counsel (ODC) and Commission on Judicial Conduct (CJC) act on the ethics complaints against 14th Circuit Court Judge Carmen Tevis Mullen?

At 10 a.m. Sept. 29, 2026, Judge Mullen will appear before the CJC in Columbia to defend herself against at least four counts of judicial misconduct stemming from a 2017 tenant dispute in her gated Hilton Head Island neighborhood. According to a police report, she wanted a man known as “Ernie the Attorney” arrested, searched for probable cause, and even suggested she could sign a warrant on the spot.

Judge Mullen claims she only wanted Ernie to get mental health care. Mandy and Liz examine the charging document and her answers. In Part Two, the receipts come out.

In Part Two of True Sunlight #165, Mandy and Liz talk about what went down when Pastor JP Miller's most prized church member assets — a couple in law enforcement — finally saw the light. JP not only seemed to think the Horry County Police Department existed to promptly respond to his needs and accept his version of the truth, he seemed to believe he could turn the department against one of their own in retaliation.

In 2024, JP and faithful sidekick Tricia Ross went after a former church member's job at HCPD — because the officer allegedly sinned by gossiping about "God's anointed".
