At first, it was easy to ignore. A knock at the front door late at night, just clear enough to get someone’s attention, but never followed by anyone actually being there. It didn’t happen all at once. At first, it was just something small—a noise in the kitchen that didn’t make sense. Easy to ignore. Easy to explain away.
