    293. The Fruit Test: Discerning True Spiritual Growth in Men of Faith

    20/03/2026 | 30 mins.
How do you know if someone has real spiritual fruit in their life? In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface break down how to discern biblical fruit through a spiritual lens — and why this matters so much for men of faith, Christian men, and anyone pursuing God’s purpose.

Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruit.” But what does that actually mean in real life? This conversation explores how to recognize the difference between true, Holy Spirit-produced fruit and the fake fruit people often mistake for spiritual maturity — things like image, wealth, influence, social media presence, appearance, or hype.

Garrett and Nick walk through the biblical definition of fruit from Galatians 5, showing that real fruit comes from the Holy Spirit and is revealed through consistent love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. They also explain why faith and transformation in Christ allow you to recognize that same fruit in others.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:
    What biblical fruit actually is
Why false fruit is easy to mistake for the real thing
How social media, wealth, appearance, and status can mislead Christian men
Why words and behavior reveal what is really in a person’s heart
How relational fruit shows up in marriage, family, and close relationships
Why discipleship and multiplication are some of the clearest signs of mature faith and purpose
How men of faith can use discernment to choose mentors, leaders, and examples worth following
This episode is a practical guide for Christian men who want to live with deeper faith, walk in greater purpose, and learn how to recognize the difference between appearance and authenticity.

Because real fruit doesn’t just look good from a distance. It changes lives up close

    292. Why Most People Miss Their Purpose & How To Understand Yours

    17/03/2026 | 1h
Everyone asks the same question: “What is my purpose?” But what if that’s actually the wrong question?

In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface unpack one of the most important ideas they’ve ever discussed: the purpose perspective. Instead of asking what your purpose is, the better question is: What is the purpose?

When you zoom out and look at the entire story of Scripture—from creation to Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and the church—you begin to see a single thread running through all of human history: God is making His glory and goodness known throughout the earth.

And the incredible part? God has chosen to accomplish that mission through people. Your life isn’t about discovering one specific achievement or career path. It’s about understanding the greater purpose God is carrying out in the world and discovering your part to play in it.

In this episode, Nick and Garrett discuss:
Why purpose is not a single job or accomplishment
The “City Slickers” story and the search for the one thing
How understanding God’s larger plan brings clarity to your life
Why God cares more about who you’re becoming than what you achieve
How purpose often becomes clear only after years of preparation
Why endurance is required to see the full impact of your life
They also break down three purpose blockers that keep people from seeing and living purposefully:
Selfishness – When life becomes about your achievements and comparisons.
    2. Fear and lack of vision – When the desire for security replaces courage.
    3. Lack of endurance – When people quit before purpose fully unfolds.
When you remove these blockers and begin to see life through the purpose perspective, everything changes. Your job becomes purposeful. Your struggles become preparation. Your obedience becomes meaningful. Because purpose isn’t about discovering one specific thing you’re supposed to do.

It’s about living in alignment with the greater story God is writing across all of history. And when you understand that perspective, you stop drifting—and start living with purpose.

    291. The Warrior Code: Honor

    13/03/2026 | 34 mins.
Honor is one of the most powerful — and most misunderstood — principles in life. In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface break down what honor really means, why it matters, and how it affects everything from leadership and relationships to faith and personal growth.

Most people think honor simply means respect or admiration. But the Bible reveals something deeper: honor means assigning value — choosing to value what God values and responding accordingly.

Garrett explains how honor is foundational to God’s design for authority, order, and blessing. When you learn to honor God, honor people, and honor the structures God puts in place, you gain access to the wisdom, opportunities, and favor that flow through those relationships.

The episode explores:The biblical definition of honor and why it’s different from respect
How dishonor shows up in modern culture
Why honor is not based on whether someone deserves it
The story of David honoring Saul despite being mistreated
How honor unlocks blessing and opportunity
Why humility is the foundation of honor
Nick and Garrett also dive into the beliefs that create a “state of honor,” including:God is the highest authority
God establishes authority to create order
    Honor unlocks blessing and access
    True honor flows from humility
The challenge of honor is simple but powerful: You don’t honor people because they deserve it.
You honor because of who you are. And when you choose honor — even when it’s difficult — you align yourself with God’s design for leadership, relationships, and influence.

Because in God’s kingdom: Honor opens doors that talent alone never will.

    290. Rod Vilhauer - Why God Prepares You In The Desert & Why Cities Need Godly Leaders

    09/03/2026 | 1h 11 mins.
What happens when God prepares you for nearly two decades before revealing your next assignment?

In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface sit down with entrepreneur and community leader Rod Vilhauer, who shares the incredible journey that led him from business success… to personal desert… to stepping into a completely unexpected calling: running for mayor of Frisco, Texas.

Rod built a company that generated $400 million a year in revenue, only to watch it collapse and spend the next 18 years walking through a season of waiting and testing. What looked like a desert was actually preparation.

Through stories about faith, perseverance, and sowing seed when nothing seems to be growing, Rod explains how God uses difficult seasons to build the character needed for future leadership.

    The conversation explores:
Why God often spends more time working in a person than working through them
How seasons of struggle build the foundation for purpose
The biblical principle of sowing seed even in drought
Why faith requires looking vertical instead of horizontal
The role Christians should play in leadership and public life
What it looks like to step into purpose even later in life
Rod also shares the story of his brother planting crops during a drought when every other farmer said it was pointless—only to see an incredible harvest later. The lesson is simple but powerful: If you stop sowing, you eliminate your chance to reap.

Whether you’re in a season of waiting, wondering about your calling, or trying to understand how faith intersects with leadership and culture, this episode will challenge you to keep sowing, keep trusting God, and stay ready for the moment when the door finally opens.

Because sometimes the longest seasons of preparation lead to the most unexpected purpose.

    289. Obedience Isn't About Rules, It's About The Heart

    06/03/2026 | 37 mins.
What if obedience isn’t about rules… but about your heart? In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett Unclebach and Nick Surface break down what obedience really means and why most people misunderstand it. The problem isn’t usually that people don’t know what to do — the real challenge is why they’re doing it.

Garrett explains that God cares more about the heart behind your actions than the actions themselves. Someone can do the right thing for the wrong reason, while another person can pursue God imperfectly but with a heart that truly desires Him. Obedience begins when your heart is aligned with God’s heart.

The conversation dives into how obedience flows from love and submission — not legalism — and how the process of following God transforms both your thinking and your character. Nick and Garrett unpack how this plays out in real life through three major areas:

Marriage – Why guarding your heart determines how well you love the people closest to you.
Money – How trusting money instead of God slowly pulls your heart away from Him.
The Process – Why faithfulness in the present moment matters more than rushing toward outcomes.

They also explore the powerful formula in Romans 12:1–2 — offering your life to God, renewing your mind, and learning to recognize His will. Obedience isn’t just about behavior; it’s about the transformation of your mind and heart working together.

The good news is you don’t have to be perfect. Obedience isn’t about flawless performance. It’s about a heart that continually turns back toward God and says: “Whatever you want… that’s what I want.”
