Should sun cream be more affordable?

    29/05/2026 | 17 mins.
With temperatures climbing into the mid-20s this week, many people have been making the most of the sunshine and warm weather. However, increased exposure to the sun also brings a higher risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.
In light of this, calls are growing for VAT to be removed from sun cream and similar products, with campaigners arguing that they should be recognised not as cosmetic items, but as essential health products.
These calls would mean that the 23% VAT on sun cream would be scrapped. Is this a good idea, and why is sun protection already so costly?
Joining Andrea to discuss is Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne, Corinna Tolan, Co-Owner of Monica Tolan Skin Experts and more.
