Reflecting History

"The earth seemed unearthly." The character of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness is one of the most enigmatic depictions of villainy in modern times. By the time Marlow reaches Kurtz' compound, his reality has completely been dismantled. Nothing is stable and everything he thinks he knows is subject to deconstruction. Author Joseph Conrad uses doubles, paradoxes, and ironies to show Kurtz as both representative and enemy of the civilizing mission. Admist the confusion and chaos, Marlow outlines his controversial views of the people he sees in the Congo, while we as readers ask ourselves to what extent is the evil represented in Heart of Darkness representative of a universal condition? 
This episode is part 4 in a larger series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers all of chapter 2, right up until the fateful moment where Marlow comes face to face with Kurtz. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now.

As Marlow travels deeper into the heart of darkness, we get our first look at the enigmatic Kurtz. At first just a peripheral figure who is important to the ivory collection operation of the nameless "Company," Kurtz comes to occupy more of Marlow's thoughts the further into the Congo he goes. Marlow also meets the characters of the Manager and the Brickmaker, who put different theories of authoritarianism and imperialism to the test. How complicit was the average grunt in the imperial operation?

As Marlow prepares for his journey to the Congo, he visits a psychiatrist who gives him his first glimpse at what he is getting himself into. His introduction into the pseudoscience of phrenology is an ideological starting point for his journey to Africa. Reader and character alike are hit with a wave of disorienting feelings as Marlow has his first interactions with the people of Congo, seeing how they are dehumanized. In the modern day, controversy rages around whether this depiction of Africans represents author Joseph Conrad's view, a larger western view that has been enshrined in the study of history, or just the viewpoint of a character in a book. 
This is the second episode in a series on Heart of Darkness. It covers most of Chapter 1 of the book, Marlow's journey to Africa, and his first interactions with the people of the Congo. We also discuss Chinua Achebe's famous critique of the book. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. What exactly is the heart of darkness? Was the Belgian Congo a unique circumstance of imperialism or just another example of human nature at work? Is the text of Heart of Darkness a legitimate critique of the imperial mindset, or is it actually just upholding the very norms and imperialistic conventions it is ostensibly dismantling?
This is the first episode in a series covering the book. It provides an overview of the historical context of European imperialism in Africa, including the ivory and rubber boom in the Congo. We also set the ideological stage for the narrative of the book. The civilizing mission is discussed and we wonder if we are all just prisoners of our own historical moment? Was european imperialism just another cycle of histories that have already happened long ago? We also dive into Marlow's origins, back story, and recruitment with "The Company."

In this episode I'm joined by author Eve J. Chung to discuss her latest book The Young Will Remember, a historical fiction novel set during the Korean War. We discuss her book, different historical narratives and memories of the Korean War, complex questions of identity on the Korean Peninsula, how the war affected Asian Americans back in the United States, imperialism and strategic bombing, the sexual abuse of women by the Japanese military during World War II as well as it's legacy and impact, women's experience of the Korean War, the psychology of ordinary people during the war, and much more.
Eve J. Chung is a Taiwanese American lawyer and women's human rights specialist. She has worked on a range of issues, including torture, sexual violence, contemporary forms of slavery, and discriminatory legislation. Her writing is inspired by social justice movements, and the continued struggle for equality and fundamental freedoms worldwide. She currently lives in New York with her husband, two children, and two dogs.
