Happy spooky season!! Or perhaps not-so-happy spooky season because this week on The Book Fix Podcast, Yajaira and Cheli are diving into another disturbing story from Reddit’s NoSleep. This one is told from the perspective of a lonely child who befriends a tall, skeletal figure named Oliver near the river behind their home.
Oliver may be the child’s only companion, but his cold touch, cracking bones, unsettling gifts, and increasingly painful “games” suggest that he is anything but imaginary or at least friendly. 
Yajaira and Cheli attempt to unravel the story’s upsetting final twist, debate whether Oliver was a demon, an imaginary friend brought to life, or a grown man hiding in plain sight, and somehow take a detour into the deeply questionable imaginary-friend romance novel Yajaira read as a child. Was Oliver supernatural, or is the truth somehow even more horrifying? The theories are divided, the vibes are deeply uncomfortable, and the Spookometer may be sitting at zero, but the sadness and emotional damage are off the charts.

This week on The Book Fix Podcast, Yajaira and Cheli are diving into The Mad Wife by Meagan Church which is a haunting historical story about motherhood, marriage, and what happens when a woman refuses to fit neatly into the role everyone has chosen for her.
Set in the 1950s, the story follows Lulu, a wife and mother surrounded by women who seem to have the whole “perfect housewife” thing figured out. Lulu, meanwhile, is struggling to keep up with the cooking, cleaning, motherhood, and constant expectation that she should be grateful and smiling through all of it. When she learns she’s pregnant again, those cracks only begin to deepen.

This week on The Book Fix Podcast, Yajaira and Cheli are taking Reddit NoSleep outside and somehow the mosquitoes and surprise bugs are only the beginning of the nightmare.
The story follows a woman who has spent three exhausting years caring for her husband, Mark, after a devastating accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. But when his shattered phone mysteriously appears several feet away from his bed, she begins to suspect that something—or someone—is moving through their home. Mark’s terrified expressions, bloodied fingers, and strange attempts to communicate only deepen the mystery.
Yajaira and Cheli unpack the devastating twist, debate whether the wife understands what she is doing, question how Mark managed to get the hidden phone, and compare the story’s disturbing dynamic to real cases of medical abuse. While the story earns only a four on the spookometer, its sadness level is an undeniable ten out of ten.
Was this a horror story about a dangerous caregiver, or a tragic portrait of someone whose love and trauma became impossible to separate?

Macy is desperate for work when she comes across an unusually well-paying caretaker job. The catch? When she arrives, she discovers there’s no elderly husband to care for at all. Instead, she’s being paid to stay alone in a remote house and follow a very specific set of bizarre rituals left behind by the woman’s late husband. Turn off the lights at the right time. Follow the instructions. Deal with the rabbits. And whatever happens, do not mess up because apparently these rituals might be the only thing standing between normal life and the end of the world.
