The Christian Jung

I once had a dream that took fifteen years to interpret and twenty years to come true. I knew the moment I woke that it mattered. I took it to every trusted counselor I had, and not one interpretation ever rang true. Today, on episode 19 of the season, we finally arrive at interpretation.
This episode is week nine of our ten-week series on the dreaming life, and it explains something you may have noticed: I built the entire foundation of dream interpretation before I ever taught interpretation itself. That was deliberate. After 25 years of teaching this, I've learned that interpretation is the last step of the process, because at its most basic level it is not something you do. It is something the Holy Spirit does with you, building on the foundation you've laid.
I tell the story of the dream I couldn't crack, the semi-truck crashing in the road in front of me, and how it finally opened only when the events of the world caught up to it. We look at John 14:26 and how the Holy Spirit partners with us in remembering and illuminating, at Habakkuk 2 and the revelation that awaits an appointed time, and at the four passages where Scripture calls us clay and God the potter: Isaiah 64:8, Jeremiah 18, Isaiah 45:9, and Job 10:9. We also look at Carl Jung's Psychology and Religion, where he used the dreams of atheist patients at Yale in 1937 to show that even they were being formed at night.

What do you actually do after a dream ends? Most of us write it in a journal, or worse, let it float away with our morning coffee. Today we talk about what happens next, the three-step sequence that turns a single dream image into months of real spiritual formation.
This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by walking through nepsis, the Desert Fathers' practice of paying attention, synchronicity, Carl Jung's term for meaningful coincidence developed alongside physicist Wolfgang Pauli, and active imagination, modeled by the prophet Habakkuk stationing himself on the ramparts to hear what God would say. I tell the story of a giraffe that followed me everywhere, in decor, in the news, in random conversations, for weeks, until I finally stopped and asked God what it meant, and the season of leadership formation that followed.
We talk about why this matters even if you rarely dream, since nepsis works just as well on your waking life. We look at Biblical examples of active imagination in Abraham, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah, and we close with a prayer from the twelfth-century mystic Richard of St. Victor and a practical way to start noticing what God has already been saying to you.

Is every nightmare an attack from the enemy? Or could God actually be the one speaking through the dream that terrifies you? Today we tackle one of the hardest and most misunderstood categories in the dreaming life: the nightmare.
This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking honestly at where nightmares come from and how to tell the difference. I share my own story of night terrors starting at age three, twenty years of fear at night, and the deliverance prayer that finally broke the pattern. I also share a nightmare I had ten years later, one that terrified me into thinking I'd lost my deliverance, and what it actually took me a full five-year season to understand it had been warning me about all along.
We look at Scripture's own scary dreams, Daniel's vision that made him sick for three days, and Job's testimony that God scared him with dreams and terrified him with visions. We talk about the discernment test that actually matters, not how afraid a dream makes you, but what fruit it leaves in your soul. You keep having the same dream. Or the same number keeps showing up on your clock. Or the same street sign keeps appearing in three different places in one week. It's not an angel number, and it's not there to freak you out. Today we talk about why God repeats Himself, patiently, until we finally say yes to the conversation He's trying to have with us.
This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking at repeating patterns, both in our dream life and our waking life. I share a dream I still have after 25 years, an exam I never studied for, and the real, somatic anxiety it gives me every single time. We look at why the exam dream is one of the most common recurring dreams in human experience, what Carl Jung discovered about reoccurring dreams in his own clinical work, and how King Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 2 shows the same pattern playing out three thousand years earlier.

A frightening figure in your dream is not what you think it is. Neither is the stranger you can't place, the ex from twenty years ago, or the beautiful radiant stranger. Today we discover that only about one percent of the time does a figure in a dream actually represent themselves. The rest of the time, they're carrying something else entirely.
This episode continues our ten-week series on the dreaming life by looking at the cast of people who show up in our dreams and what they're actually there to tell us. We talk about Carl Jung's concept of projection, the way dream figures become containers for feelings, seasons, and soul wounds we haven't fully faced, and we walk through Jacob's all-night wrestling match at the Jabbok in Genesis 32, where he refused to let go until he received a blessing.
