  • Advocates push for more bicyclist protections in the city
    The KYW Newsradio All-Local on Saturday, May. 10, 2025 (morning edition): Advocacy groups are calling for more investment in bicycle safety after a cyclist was hit by a dump truck and killed Thursday morning while riding his bike in Southwest Philly. A house fire destroyed a home in West Philadelphia yesterday afternoon, killing one man and leaving a woman hurt. Firefighters responded to a 2-story rowhome on the 200 block of North Ruby Street shortly before 3 pm, where they found it engulfed in flames. Neighbors told our news partners at NBC10 that they frequently heard arguing from that home. One neighbor, Eugene Kirby, said he believes a couple was living there illegally. Fire officials have not yet identified either of the victims or a cause of the fire. The Philadelphia Sheriff is floating the idea of creating a training academy for sheriff’s deputies in the city, that could also serve surrounding counties. Rather than concede to critics like the non-government Committee of 70 who say the office should be abolished, the Sheriff thinks her office needs a sizeable budget increase. Love Your Park Week launches today (Saturday) in Philadelphia and runs through May 18th. The much-anticipated FIFA World Cup is still a whole year away.     The KYW Newsradio All-Local - Friday, May 9, 2025 (Evening Edition) About a hundred or so Philly faithful packed The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at lunchtime to celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV. Radar screens went black again today at Newark Liberty International Airport. It's the second outage there in two weeks, raising more safety concerns. The federal Real ID mandate is now in place, and for many Pennsylvanians who procrastinated getting that ID, they’re now left waiting in hours long lines trying to get one. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has conditionally vetoed a bill that creates a new penalty for inciting a public brawl. A record fair featuring 75 vendors is taking place this weekend in Center City.

  • The Philadelphia region celebrates the election of a pope with local ties
    The Catholic Church has a new pope... Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago has been elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. The 69-year-old taking the name Leo the 14th. The faithful across the Philly region offering prayers today. KYW Newsradio's John McDevitt reports from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul along the parkway. As it turns out, Pope Leo the 14th is a Villanova University grad. KYW Newsradio's Justin Udo visited campus today and learned that long after graduation, the math major held tight to his Main Line connections. Philadelphia police have identified the man who allegedly shot an officer who was trying to break up a brawl outside Overbrook High. They say he has a criminal record and shouldn't have been armed in the first place. The officer is now stable and recovering. KYW Newsradio's Tim Jimenez has more. The Philadelphia Visitor Center and Independence Historical Trust is teaming up with the National Park Service to bring back their "movies on the mall" series for a second season in 2025.
