  • 'DIE KREUZEN LIVE ON CABLE ACCESS: 1983 & 1991' w/ Sahan Jayasuriya
This week, my guest is Sahan Jayasuriya, musician & author of Don't Say Please: The Oral History of Die Kreuzen, who discusses the influential but polarizing band, DIE KREUZEN, as we look at the two legendary cable access performances that bookended the band's career in 1983 & 1991.We discuss how Die Kreuzen is beloved by musicians such as Neko Case, Thurston Moore & Ian MacKaye; why fans often don't want their favorite band to ever change musically and how Die Kreuzen struggled with that, the band's origin story and what led to their first EP Cows And Beer, their devastating first s/t LP and how some listeners were not ready for the follow-up October File, Maximum Rocknroll, how Die Kreuzen were a chemistry band not unlike R.E.M. or Cheap Trick, how a single photo of Keith from the band moved Chris to start dressing and performing like him, the 1983 Milwaukee cable access show: Who Am I: The Punk Rock Attitude & the roundtable discussion in it plus the band's blistering 17 minutes set, how the sound of pain resonated from the band sonically on all their records, Corey Rusk and Touch & Go Records, working with Butch Vig, the artwork of Richard Kohl, Chris witnessing a punk audience turn on the band at their live show, fog machines, Pink Flag, the band working with Steve Albini, why they disbanded shortly after their 1991 cable access performance, and the great story of Lou Barlow freaking out backstage because "Die Kreuzen are right behind that door!"Whether you know Die Kreuzen or not, this is a fantastic story about whether or not audiences are willing to go where a band wants to go. All this and more on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.SAHAN JAYASURIYA: https://www.instagram.com/diekreuzenbook/DON'T SAY PLEASE: THE ORAL HISTORY OF DIE KREUZEN: https://feralhouse.com/30258/DIE KREUZEN: https://www.instagram.com/diekreuzenbook/THE CABLE ACCESS PERFORMANCES: 1983: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN3hwQ3gOP81991: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbaOoxvdtMwREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss.Revolutions Per Movies releases new episodes every Thursday on any podcast app, and additional, exclusive bonus episodes every Sunday on our Patreon. • 'STARSTRUCK' w/ Alonso Duralde
This week, I’m joined by critic, author, and podcaster Alonso Duralde, who chose to discuss the 1982 Australian New Wave music film Starstruck. We also talk about Alonso’s incredible new book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film, working in video stores, 80s mind-bending musicals like The Apple and Can't Stop The Music, how filmmaker Gillian Armstrong’s second film was nowhere near the vibe of her first (My Brilliant Career), the underground rabid fanbase for the film, the music in the film being written and performed by members of Split Enz and The Swingers, which bands were originally going to be involved in the film, what we hung on our teenage walls, bad 80s haircut experiences, how to sneak into a club, the confusing family dynamics in the film, the incredible Busby Berkeley tribute in the swimming pool sequence, where we imagine the characters in this film ended up, what stopped rock musicals being made for a spell and so much more.So let's all jump on top of the bar in unison, kick the drinks off, and magically know all the dance moves already on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!ALONSO DURALDE: @alonso.duralde@linoleumcasthttp://www.patreon.com/bfastalldayhttps://maximumfun.org/podcasts/maximum-film/https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alonso-duralde/hollywood-pride/9780762485895/https://preorder-movie-little-christmas.carrd.co/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. • ENCORE PRESENTATION: 'THE FILM AND VIDEO WORK OF THE RESIDENTS' w/ Homer Flynn (representing The Residents)
Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by Homer Flynn, representing The Residents and all things Ralph Records, to talk about their incredible body of work, and my gawd, they performed part of their epic, Eskimo, live recently...incredible! This was my chance to ask about so many things that wouldn't be typically discussed regarding The Residents. I was extremely proud when, at the end of the interview, Homer thanked me for not asking about the eyeballs. Why would I?!!??!? (Episode 45 originally aired on June 18th, 2024). The original show notes:This week, we talked to Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation, who represents the mysterious, unknown collective, THE RESIDENTS, and discussed their legacy in film and video. Topics included the band’s Theory Of Obscurity, which Resident is the easiest to negotiate with, how the band couldn’t even give their initial records away and the moment that changed, creating the Ralph Records logo, what the Residents think of A.I., how they created their album artwork and music videos, collaborating with Night Flight, being The Residents during the pandemic, why The the collective gravitated to and stayed in S.F., working with John Sanborn & Graeme Whifler, The Residents’ filmmaking heroes, making music videos in an era where there was no place to show them, how the Cryptic Corp deals with the band’s larger than life concepts, the folly of trying to accomplish everything in one’s lifetime, the story behind their Ugly Grey Theater not being allowed to exist, their early 70s feature length epic Vileness Fats and how it lead to the false start film Double Trouble which then led to their first feature length film 50 years later, Triple Trouble, and their discussion on their next large scale projects including a one song concert in Geneva and Paris. So come all you sinister exaggerators and let’s talk the visuals of The Residents.THE RESIDENTS:https://www.residents.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss.
