In this episode of To The Spirit, Beck explores Sámi mythology and spiritual traditions through Mythology of the Sámi by Nina Mielipäivä, a book sent to the show by listener Niina.

We journey through stories of Háldi guardian spirits, mysterious Saivo lakes believed to open into another world, the underground Gufihtar, sacred Seita sites, winter spirits, strange encounters in the Lapland wilderness, and the rules people followed when moving through a landscape understood to be alive.
Then the mythology becomes history.
We uncover the story of Aikia Aikianpoika, a seventeenth-century Sámi spiritual practitioner accused of murder through witchcraft and sentenced to death for practices passed down through his family. Centuries later, Niina reveals that Aikia was her tenth-generation great-uncle.
This is an episode about spirits, sacred land, cultural suppression, ancestral memory, and what survives when people are forced to hide the way they understand the world.
Because maybe the question isn't whether the land was ever empty.
Maybe it's what we stopped seeing when we stopped looking.
