Academia Unlocked: Wuthering Heights - Literacy

    19/03/2026 | 1h 18 mins.
Welcome to the first episode of Academia Unlocked, our new literary deep-dive series on Book Talk for BookTok!

In this episode, we begin with literary literacy through Wuthering Heights, building the foundation for how to approach, understand, and engage with complex literature.

With over 13 years of academic training in literature and creative writing, we guide listeners through the essential tools of reading beyond the surface. Because while the book community often talks about the decline of literacy, very few conversations actually define what literary literacy is, or how to develop it. This series is designed to change that.

We start by challenging common misconceptions about Wuthering Heights. Often labeled as a tragic romance, we explore how the novel functions instead as a psychological study of obsession, identity, and emotional intensity, reframing the story as something far more unsettling than romantic.

From there, we introduce key context surrounding the novel’s 1847 publication, its place within the Gothic tradition, and why it shocked Victorian readers who expected moral clarity and social order.

Whether you’ve read Wuthering Heights before or are encountering it for the first time, this episode will help you build the skills to approach literature with more confidence, clarity, and depth.

In Episode 2, we move into college-level literary analysis, where we’ll explore what these patterns mean and how to interpret the novel through deeper critical lenses.

A Court of Silver Flames Chapters 1 - 4: Nesta and Cassian's Story Begins

    17/03/2026 | 1h 56 mins.
Dive into our literary analysis of A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas, the bestselling author behind the global phenomenon A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR). In this season, we break down ACOSF through an academic lens, using our combined 13 years of literary training to analyze Nesta Archeron’s character arc, Cassian and Nesta’s relationship, and the deeper themes driving Sarah J. Maas’s storytelling. We explore key elements of the novel, including symbolism, metaphor, imagery, and character development, while examining major A Court of Silver Flames themes like trauma, healing, power, and transformation within the ACOTAR series.

Spoilers: This episode contains full spoilers for A Court of Silver Flames, the entire ACOTAR series (A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, and Frost and Starlight). Any other books or larger Sarah J. Maas universe theories and connections will be discussed in a separate Breadcrumbs and Broomsticks episode.

    Chapters Summary:

Nesta Archeron is forced into the Cauldron during the war with Hyburn, and instead of breaking she steals power back, and is forever changed.

Months later when the war is over, she lives alone in a shabby Velaris apartment, spiraling through wine, one-night stands, and isolation to drown out her guilt and trauma. When Cassian shows up to drag her to the River House, Nesta expects judgment, but does not anticipate Feyre’s ultimatum: move to the House of Wind, train with Cassian, and work in the library—or be shipped off to the human lands. Cornered and furious, Nesta agrees, feeling stripped of control all over again. Meanwhile, in addition to his duties as general and training Nesta, Cassian is tasked with a new role he feels ill-suited to accept: playing courtier.

What is the balance of character development versus plot-driven narrative in Silver Flames, and how does this compel the reader to feel about Nesta’s journey?

Interview with Sasha E. Sloan, author of The Ruins Beneath Us

    13/03/2026 | 50 mins.
In this special interview episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we sit down with author and storyteller Sasha E. Sloan to discuss her debut YA fantasy novel, The Ruins Beneath Us. Known for her viral storytelling on TikTok and the fan-favorite series Noble House of Black, Sasha shares how her transition from digital creator to traditionally published author shaped the world, characters, and themes of her novel.

Together, we explore the heart of the story: a coming-of-age journey centered on autonomy, family legacy, and the weight of the choices our parents make before we’re old enough to understand them. Sasha also pulls back the curtain on crafting the book’s emotionally layered love triangle, building complex characters like the brooding Cygnus and determined Finn, and reimagining Elvish lore in a way that feels both classic and refreshingly new for YA fantasy readers.

We also talk about the current state of the YA genre, what Sasha hopes to see more of in the space, and how she plans to push the genre forward in future books. If you love fantasy worlds, complicated character dynamics, and conversations about the deeper themes shaping today’s YA storytelling, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.
