High-yield investing with Martin Connaghan of Murray International Trust | Ep.129
Host Stuart Fieldhouse meets Martin Connaghan, co-manager of the Murray International Trust. Murray International, listed in London and acquired by abrdn in 2001, is regarded as a sector leader in terms of the dividend yield it is able to deliver to investors.
But how does a fund manager go about achieving such great results? Stuart talks to Martin about his allocation to emerging markets and how that fits into the Murray International strategy, and in particular about the red hot Asia tech stock sector.
Stuart and Martin also chat about the fund’s overall strategy and some recent new additions to the portfolio. How do the managers make the case of buying a new position for the fund? Martin also explains how the managers have designed the defensive characteristics of the portfolio, and what this means in practice.

Finding the next big US technology success story with Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust | Ep.127
We kick off the new year with host Stuart Fieldhouse talking to Gary Robinson, a partner at Baillie Gifford and the manager of the Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust [LON;USA], a FTSE 250 constituent. It seems like a timely discussion with so much focus on the US market at the moment. and with hedge fund Saba Capital seeking to take control of the trust's board.
On the podcast we chat about the investment trust's strategy and especially its exposure to unlisted companies. We look at how the trust optimises its exposure to the US tech sector and whether the Mag 7 stocks are distracting tech investors from other opportunities. Gary also gives us his views on how to spot the next big technology success story.
It's not all tech though: we also had time to look at the US healthcare sector and of course the likely impact of Donald Trump on the US stock market.
Listeners should be aware that the podcast was recorded prior to Saba Capital's announcement on 18 December in which it said it would seek governance changes at seven listed trusts.
