    We'll be right back!

    03/04/2026 | 2 mins.
Hello everyone! Gráinne has, somewhat inconveniently for us but thrillingly for her, disappeared into the bright lights and late nights of Saturday Night Live UK—which means The Way They Were is entering a brief period of organised chaos.
For the next couple of weeks, we’ll be popping up in slightly odd places, like a situationship that won’t quite define itself. But we’re not leaving you stranded, we’re lining up some bonus episodes to keep things ticking over while Gráinne enjoys life as a superstar sketch writer. She will, of course, return to her true calling soon: deep, forensic dives into celebrity breakups, with all the relish of someone who’s been briefly allowed to forget them.
However look out for some Gossip episodes, a special friendship break-up episode and a reality show deep dive with some familiar faces from our recent past!

Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan with Bella Hull

    17/03/2026 | 1h 13 mins.
Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter looked like one of those modern celebrity pairings that somehow made sense: the brooding Irish actor and the pop star with the sharpest tongue on the charts. Two pint-sized superstars with the world at their feet, until it was all over.
This week on The Way They Were, we pick apart the short-and-sweet romance between the Saltburn star and the Espresso chanteuse, from whirlwind beginnings to a breakup that seemed to arrive before Sabrina had even finished writing the next album. This week, Chantal and Gráinne are joined by stand-up comic Bella Hull to sift through the drama.
Also we have an update from Gráinne while Chantal explains why everybody wants to be invited to this year's Vanity Fair Oscars party.

Jennifer Lopez and Diddy with Esther Manito

    03/03/2026 | 1h 6 mins.
Love might not cost a thing, but this one came with a lot of receipts. When Jennifer Lopez (back once again!) fell for Sean Combs in 1999, it felt like pop had engineered its own super-couple. She was shimmering on the brink of full-blown world domination; he was the Svengali of west coast rap. Tracksuits, champagne, Versace dresses and so much white clothing.
Then came the nightclub shooting, the arrest and the cheating. This week, Chantal and Gráinne are joined by stand-up comedian Esther Manito to unpick J.Lo's first tabloid romance and ask why couldn't these two lovebirds make it work?

Napoleon and Josephine with Rosalie Minnitt

    17/02/2026 | 1h 22 mins.
The original short king meets the ultimate revolutionary party girl and sparks one of history’s most chaotic love stories. Napoleon, the obsessive letter-writer who conquered Europe but couldn’t quite conquer matters of the heart falls hard for Josephine: glamorous, widowed, and a real good time girl.
Comedian and actress Rosalie Minnitt joins Gráinne and Chantal to unpack the passion, politics and spectacularly messy breakup of history’s most dramatic power couple. Yes, tonight, Josephine!

About The Way They Were

The podcast where every celebrity split is the one that got away. Each week comedians Grainne Maguire and Chantal Feduchin-Pate take a deep dive into a celebrity breakup, chosen by a special guest, that still lingers in their hearts and minds. We scour interviews, over-analyse iconic pictures and search for meaning in post-breakup media statements. Celeb gossip hounds will feel right at home, but really anyone who's experienced a breakup can appreciate hearing how the rich and famous take heartbreak to a whole new level. They might uncouple ‘amicably with love and respect for one another’ - but we never get over these lost loves! Join us every Friday for a new episode.
