Why do so many smart, accomplished, and successful women stay in toxic relationships? In this powerful episode of Heartbreak to Happiness, Sara Davison is joined by Lindsay Abernathy, host of the Bitch Is a Bad Word podcast, to uncover the hidden dynamics of emotional abuse, coercive control, and narcissistic relationships.
Drawing from her own lived experience, Lindsay shares how abuse can exist behind the façade of a picture-perfect life, why leaving is rarely as simple as it seems, and the subtle red flags that often go unnoticed. Together, Sara and Lindsay explore trauma bonds, love bombing, gaslighting, post-separation abuse, co-parenting with a toxic ex, and how survivors can reclaim their confidence, voice, and sense of self.
If you've ever questioned your reality, wondered whether you're "overreacting," or felt trapped in an unhealthy relationship, this conversation offers clarity, validation, and hope. Lindsay also shares practical advice for healing, rebuilding your support system, and creating a peaceful life after abuse.
    In this episode, you'll discover:
Why intelligent, capable women can become trapped in toxic relationships
The warning signs of coercive control, gaslighting, and love bombing
How abuse impacts children—and why peace matters more than appearances
Strategies for co-parenting with a high-conflict or narcissistic ex
How to rebuild your confidence, identity, and future after leaving
This is an honest, empowering conversation for anyone seeking freedom from toxic relationships—and proof that healing, happiness, and a brighter future are possible.

This is the first in a two-part series, produced in partnership with the non-profit organisation Right to Equality, where we look into the shocking subject of child removal in private family proceedings in England and Wales.
To help me understand more about this phenomenon I’m joined by three impressive guests:
Dr Charlotte Proudman, women’s rights barrister, Founder of Right to Equality, and author of the book “He Said, She Said” recalls how she represented a 15 year old girl we call “Florence”. Charlotte talks about Florence’s remarkable courage in independently fighting to return to her mum in the High Court, after she was removed from her aged 10. “He Said, She Said” is out now in paperback. You can read more about Florence’s case in an article by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism here.
Professor Jo Delahunty KC is a leading silk in both public and private law cases. She was the winner of 2025 Family silk of the year for skills. She is also an author of two recent books, “We Set the Bar” and “Domestic Abuse and the Family Justice System”. Jo tells us about a recent groundbreaking case Re: Y (Experts and Alienating Behaviour: The Modern Approach) where she represented a 15 year old boy as he put forward his case to return to his mother, before the most senior family judge in England and Wales.
The Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales, Claire Waxman OBE, also joins Sara’s panel of guests to share how she came to learn about the phenomena of child removal and the role that unregulated experts have to play in these removals. She shares her personal experience and work in uncovering the harmful practices of experts and her hopes for imminent change.
