- In this inspiring episode, during Donate Life Week, Kim sits down with liver transplant recipient, athlete, and advocate Kate Clark to share an extraordinary story of resilience, gratitude, and making the most of a second chance at life. After losing her brother to the same rare genetic liver condition that later led to her own transplant at just 17 years old, Kate reflects on the challenges of chronic illness, survivor's guilt, and the life changing gift of organ donation. She opens up about the mindset shift that helped her reclaim her future, the importance of living in the present, and how self-love, resilience and movement have shaped her journey through grief, recovery, and beyond.
Kate also shares how she transformed her second chance into an incredible athletic career, representing Australia at the World Transplant Games and inspiring others through her work as a trustee of the World Transplant Games Federation. As we recognise Donate Life Week, this conversation is a timely reminder of the profound impact organ donation can have, not only on recipients, but on families and communities. Kate encourages us to register as organ donors, have meaningful conversations with our loved ones about our wishes and embrace every opportunity life presents with courage, purpose and gratitude.
About Kate
Kate Clark grew up in regional New South Wales, the youngest child of Kim and John, with her older brother Johnny. Johnny became seriously unwell at the age of three, and the family moved first to Wollongong and later Sydney to be closer to specialist medical care. He received his first liver transplant at nine, a second at eleven, and a third at fifteen, a long and difficult journey that shaped the entire family. Kate was diagnosed with the same disease at eight. Johnny passed away at fifteen due to complications following surgery; Kate was twelve.
Kate spent her teenage years refusing to let illness dictate her life. Running became her way to cope with grief, anger, and uncertainty, a place where she could choose her own pace and make some sort of sense of things. Even with chronic liver failure she competed at a high level in both state and national titles in athletics and cross country. At seventeen she was listed for a transplant, a decision she resisted after watching her brother’s experience. That changed one morning when she describes having an epiphany: if she was going to face a transplant, she wanted to be fit enough to take it on. She returned to training, ran some of the best times of her life, and received the call that evening.
Her surgery lasted more than 21 hours. Her parents were told not to expect her home. She spent three months in hospital, three more with home nursing, and then - stubbornly - returned to training. She went on to represent Australia at the World Transplant Games, compete at the OCR World Championships, and build a life fixed on movement, community, and purpose.
Kate eventually landed her dream job at Transplant Australia, and spent two years working to motivate, inspire and engage the transplant community. She now serves as Chair of the Sports & Events Committee for the World Transplant Games Federation and Chair of the Transplant Football Commission. She is delivering the second Transplant Football World Cup and the first-ever Women’s Transplant Football Showcase tournament in September – something she is extremely proud of.
Her family’s health story continued to shape her life: her father received a transplant in 2004 and continues to thrive, and her mother passed away from cancer in 2018.
Kate’s experiences have given her a clear sense of what matters and what doesn’t. She has learned to value the small, ordinary parts of life, the things that actually get you through hard moments. Living so close to illness and loss taught her that material things mean nothing in the end, and that what lasts is gratitude, empathy, and humility. These principles (she hopes) guide how she works, how she leads, and how she shows up for others in the transplant community and beyond.
Her definition of Self Love is: Self love is setting boundaries. It is accepting myself for all of my warts and all.
Her favourite quote is : You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

Quotes:
Sometimes you must endure the ride in order to get the best parts.
Sometimes you are down the bottom, and you don’t know whether to get off or go back round again. But then the life at the top is full of beautiful moments and a great view.
If I am going to face it, I need to face it head on and do what I can to be able to, come out the other side and live a normal life.
Running certainly helped with overcoming anger, grief, all those things after my brother passed away.
Tell me I can’t do something and I will do my best to prove you wrong.
It is a huge part of the transplant journey. It is called survivor’s guilt.
There is often so much guilt that is wrapped up in gratitude.
Every morning we wake up, paying tribute and trying to honour the gift that we are being given.
Families have to make a decision at the most harrowing time of their life to pass that gift on.
We try and show them the gratitude that we have for them making that decision at the time, in their moment of utter grief and tragedy.
Face the challenges that are right in front of you today and then move past them.
You don’t look in the rear view mirror, you look forward because that is the way you are going.
Tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone.
Live the now.
Focus on here, focus on the now, do the things that bring you joy, share that joy wherever you can.
Be present in the now.
Be present for the people that you love as well.
If you are willing to accept, you should also be willing to give.
Trying to respect my needs while still being there for others.
Face the challenges that are right in front of you today. And then move past them.
One donor can save up to seven lives and then better the lives of many more.
It is important to have that conversation with them, advise them of your wishes, ensure that they understand.
The time just enables you to reflect on the positives with a smile and with love in your heart rather than the sadness.
Allowing yourself to just feel. Feel the feels. But don't wallow in them.
It is nice to have a cry sometimes. It is nice to have a laugh.
You do have the strength within you, whether you believe it in yourself or not.

Quotes:
I truly believe one of the most underacted acts of self care available to us all is movement.
Your incredible body performs miracles.
So often we focus on what our body looks like rather than what it allows us to do.
The truth is movement is one of the greatest gifts we can ever bestow upon ourselves.
When we move our bodies, we don’t just strengthen muscles, we strengthen our mind.
A walk in nature can solve problems that hours of overthinking never will.
One of the greatest lessons movement teaches us is to become comfortable being uncomfortable.
Ageing well isn’t about looking younger or trying to do everything you can to avoid it. It is about continuing to live fully.
Your body is not a problem to be fixed. It is a miracle to be celebrated.
Every step, every breath, every movement, is a declaration of self love.

MUSIC INTRO & OUTRO
Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this deeply moving episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim Morrison sits down with adaptive athlete, world record holder, and mental health advocate Mick Marshall, whose life changed forever after a catastrophic 120 metre fall from a wind turbine in 2021. Facing multiple surgeries, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), and the daunting challenge of learning to walk again, Mick refused to let his circumstances define him. Drawing on the mindset of an endurance athlete, he shares how he rebuilt both his body and his spirit through movement, innovative recovery practices, and an unwavering commitment to believing that healing was possible. His extraordinary journey has since seen him break world records, including completing the fastest marathon on crutches, proving that resilience can flourish even in life’s darkest moments.
Together, Kim and Mick explore what self love truly means when life doesn’t go to plan, touching on the power of acceptance, the importance of surrounding yourself with the right support team, and why movement remains one of our greatest medicines. From ultramarathons and mindset to gratitude, purpose, and the incredible energy that comes from human connection, this conversation is filled with practical wisdom and heartfelt inspiration. Mick leaves listeners with a powerful reminder that our greatest limitations are often the ones we place on ourselves.
About Mick
Mick Marshall is a world record-breaking adaptive athlete, motivational speaker, and passionate advocate for mental health. His journey embodies resilience, transforming a devastating workplace accident into an extraordinary story of determination and triumph.
In 2021, Mick’s life changed forever when he fell from a wind turbine, suffering catastrophic leg injuries. Enduring nine major surgeries, two complete foot reconstructions, and a gruelling rehabilitation process, he had to relearn how to walk again three times.
Mick now lives with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a chronic condition that causes intense, burning pain, often far worse than the original injury. But Mick refuses to let pain define him. Instead, he has channelled his endurance athlete mindset into recovery, ultimately setting a world record for the fastest marathon completed on crutches.
Following his accident, Mick endured years of powerful medications, meant to mask the pain but pushing him to the brink of despair. His turning point came with a bold decision to run again. Despite warnings from his legal team that running would jeopardise any compensation, Mick prioritised his mental health, choosing movement over fear. Though he can never return to his career as an electrician, his former employer has denied him a payout.
Today, Mick is the founder of Beyond Endurance, a movement dedicated to helping others face life’s toughest challenges. He encourages people to rethink their relationship with pain and reminds them that giving up is never the answer. Through his keynote presentations, Mick shares hard-earned insights on resilience, mindset, and overcoming adversity, inspiring audiences across industries to push past their perceived limitations.
Whether addressing corporate teams, athletes, school students, or rehabilitation
communities, Mick’s story is a powerful reminder that obstacles are not roadblocks, they are opportunities to redefine what’s possible.
His definition of Self Love is: Self love is to find your peace. To actually accept.
His favourite quote is: You think you can or you think you can’t, you are going to be right.

Quotes:
They trigger you and they come up and they never go away because they actually become a part of who you are. But it is how we manage them.
That was just the beginning of a very long, slow, difficult journey that I have come out the other end to be grateful to have.
The mental game really stuffed me. I could always recover physically.
My system was super sensitive and over sensitised. It was not feeling very safe, so it would just shut you down.
The biggest part of learning for me was to be accepting of me, for me.
I completely lost the life that I knew.
What has always helped me? It always was running or movement.
Moving is the healthiest habit you could ever have.
Moving is the best medicine that you could ever have in your life.
My real healing happened with rest, sleep, heal and activate. Rest, sleep, heal and activate. And I did that for 3 to 4 months.
Stop watching the stuff that is going to make you feel horrible.
People say, ‘How do you do it?’ And I would say, ‘Because I can.’
To get hard stuff done, you have got to do hard stuff.
You will never know if you don’t keep going.
We have all got different abilities instead of disabilities.
Let’s look at the cup half full instead of the cup half empty.
I gain my respect through action.
I can still adapt. I can still change. I can still evolve.
I am my own person to flourish in any way I can.
You have got to let go of that outside noise because it is that outside noise that is affecting you.
The number one thing that you can do is just breathe.
Breathe and smile.
Don’t run a marathon all at once. Just break it down. One step at a time.
We are always looking at the destination. Let’s get on the journey and get on the ride.
I loved energy.
The energy of people! They lifted me to that finish line.
If you want to go solo, you will go so far. But if you want to go all the way, you need a team
Failing is achieving.

Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this Quicky of the Self Love Podcast, Kim explores the topic of forgiveness and challenges the belief that healing always requires it. She unpacks the true meaning of forgiveness, shares why acceptance may be an even more powerful path to freedom, and explains how acknowledging the past doesn’t mean approving of what happened. Through thoughtful reflections and inspiring quotes, Kim encourages us to shift the question from “How can I forgive?” to “How can I free myself?” Ultimately, this episode is a reminder that self-love is about honouring your experiences, releasing the weight of the past, and choosing peace without needing anyone else to change.

Acceptance simply says, ‘This happened. I cannot change the past. I choose not to let this define my future.’
Forgiveness is giving up all hope of having had a different past by Jack Kornfield
Forgiveness is the scent the violet emits onto the heal that crushed it.
