- In this inspiring episode of Self Love Podcast, Kim sits down with Matt Bunker to explore an extraordinary life shaped by adversity, resilience, and purpose. Growing up in a home marked by severe domestic violence, Matt shares how he overcame childhood trauma, the heartbreaking loss of his brother, and the challenges that could have defined his future. Instead, he found discipline and direction through the military, eventually earning his place in the Australian Special Forces after learning to embrace failure, accountability and personal growth. Together, Kim and Matt dive into the lasting impact of intergenerational trauma, the importance of healthy role models, and why true strength comes from choosing a different path.
Now the co-founder of Empower Longevity, Matt has dedicated his life to helping others live longer, healthier lives through preventative healthcare, advanced diagnostics, and personalised wellness programs. He shares his philosophy of self-love of putting family, health, and meaningful relationships first along with the powerful lessons he learned supporting his wife through her battle with breast cancer. This conversation is an honest and thought provoking exploration of resilience, leadership, masculinity, healing, and the courage it takes to break destructive cycles and create a life of purpose.
About Matt
Matt joined the Army after finishing school, graving something different and challenging and to get away from the domestic violence he had experienced at home. He served 16 years as an officer and in 2011 was one of 16 out of 130 candidates to successfully pass one of the hardest special forces selections in the world. As an officer in the Special Air Service Regiment, Matt led highly trained, skilled and at times very challenging personalities.
After leaving the Army in 2018, Matt embarked on a career as an Emergency and Oncology Registered Nurse where he is fulling his purpose in life to help others in need.
Matt along with a local Dr recently founded Empower Longevity. A private health clinic to bridge the gap between reactive illness management and proactive health optimization. He combines his deep clinical knowledge of disease pathology with proven strategies for achieving peak physical and mental capacity. Matt is passionate about translating these powerful insights into personalised, actionable plans to ensure every client can maximize their health span, live their potential, and truly enjoy the benefits of a longer, more vibrant life.

Quotes:
The cycle of violence will stop with me.
I was never, ever going to end up like the other men in my life.
I never wanted to be a victim.
I never wanted to blame anything that I did or anything that ever happened to me on other circumstances.
I wanted to excel at whatever I wanted to do.
I am very, very grateful for the opportunities that I had.
I knew that I had to extract myself from that situation as much as I possibly could.
What I wanted to do had to be in support of helping other people.
I firmly believe that intergenerational trauma is real because I deal with it on a constant basis, personally.
I have such a beautiful relationship with my wife and kids.
She taught me more about resilience that year, and courage, than I have ever been taught or experienced in my entire military career.
You have a choice to raise your hand, you have a choice to raise your voice. You have a choice to walk away.
Routine is a big thing for me. The militarily gave me that in spades.
I wanted to feel like I belonged to something.
When you learn to embrace failure, you enter this continuous improvement cycle.
Every time I fail at something, I see it as an opportunity.
When you address your weaknesses and you are accountable, people acknowledge that.
I have always looked at me first.
There is a fine difference between confidence and arrogance.
When you operate in a group, you operate amongst collectively much more experience than individually you ever have.
Respectful, intelligent conflict brings about positive change.
You need to empower people to challenge your decisions.
When you empower people to make decisions you are saying to them that you value them and you value their skills and capabilities, you trust them.
Knowledge is power.
Live longer, live stronger.
I have three priorities in life. They are family, health and friends.
I made a very clear decision in life that I was going to be ruthless about who I let in my circle
My circle of influence is pretty tight.
Just be a good person.

MUSIC INTRO & OUTRO
Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this inspiring episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim welcomes Briar Kirkby, founder of Briar Loves Bali Retreats, to share her extraordinary journey of healing, resilience, and transformation. After navigating a difficult divorce and a life changing diagnosis of tonsil cancer, Briar discovered profound healing in Bali, where the island’s culture, spirituality, and deep sense of community helped her recover physically, emotionally and spiritually. She opens up about her cancer treatment, the alternative healing modalities she embraced, and how Bali became a sanctuary that ultimately inspired a whole new chapter of her life.
This conversation explores the intimate women’s retreats Briar now hosts in Bali, designed to help participants slow down, reconnect with themselves and experience genuine healing in a supportive environment. With small group sizes, personalised care, and a focus on rest, connection, and self-discovery, Briar’s retreats offer women a unique opportunity to step away from the busyness of life and return home feeling refreshed, empowered, and deeply connected to themselves.
About Briar:
Briar Kirkby is the founder of Briar Loves Bali Retreats. After navigating divorce, single parenting and a cancer diagnosis in midlife, she found herself completely reassessing the life she had built and the pressure she had placed on herself for so many years.
A trip to Bali at the end of her cancer treatment became a turning point. It gave her space to slow down, reconnect with herself and begin creating a different way of living, one built around rest, simplicity and choosing herself more intentionally.
Today, Briar splits her time between Perth and Bali, where she renovates villas and hosts small group retreats for women who feel stretched too thin and disconnected from themselves. Her retreats focus on creating space for women to slow down, reflect and reconnect, without pressure to constantly perform or keep pushing through.
Briar speaks openly about midlife, resilience, rebuilding after major life change, and the importance of rest, self-love and learning to come back to yourself after difficult seasons of life.
Her definition of Self Love is: Self love is filling my cup. Everyday waking up and finding something positive about my day.
Her favourite quote is: Challenged accepted! Favourite Saying! Come on Bridget!

Quotes:
My heart has always been there, but I think it is deeper now.
The people there have got this beautiful sense, they have got nothing and they give you so much.
Every time I went back there, it changed me.
I changed how I thought, how I lived, what I wanted, and when I go there, I just feel peace.
They do it with absolute unconditional love.
I think they are born with love. They live with belief and hope.
It is such an honour to go and be in that environment and watch these people truly believe that these blessings are for the better.
Bali is the heart chakra of the planet
We get one shot, that’s it. We don’t get a comeback. This is no dress rehearsal. This is it.
Balinese people held my hand.
Bali has that sense of allowing you to be you. Just you.
I found it for a reason, and I am here for a reason.
Your body actually sends messages and allows me to pass them back to you.
I wasn’t using my voice. I wasn’t speaking my truth.
I was full of shit. I was lying to myself. The more bullshit I believed, I think the sicker I got.
I realised that I wasn’t telling people how I really felt.
I wasn’t being honest about me.
I believe that toxicity in my environment got me to that day.
After cancer and after a nasty divorce, and to find myself again, and to be this happy human that I wake up every day happy to be here.
I am grateful to my ex-husband because he has made me who I am. Because of him, I found myself.
I thought everything was over. So becoming the phoenix and rising to who I am today.
I guarantee you that I am going listen to you.
I want you to leave and feel a little bit lighter.
Love who you are, where you are at, the body you are in
You can change your mind, your path, your priorities, your friends at any time because that is my choice.
Stop being hard on you. Be kind to you.

Quotes:
Grief is not something we just get over. It is something we learn to move with, breathe through, and in all intentions, we learn to honour it.
You have to feel it, to heal it.
Emotions are purely energy in motion.
If we suppress this grief, it doesn’t disappear. It just stores itself in the body.
Sometimes our deepest pain becomes our greatest awakening.
There is just no perfect way to grieve.
Self love during grief is not about pretending to be okay. It is about meeting yourself with compassion while you are not okay.
Grief simply reflects the depths of your love.
Even after loss, even after heartbreak, even after pain you are still worthy of love, especially your own.

MUSIC INTRO & OUTRO
Many thanks to Wes and Charlotte Carr – https://wesleydeanmusic.com/ - In this heartfelt episode, Kim sits down with Sue Anderson-Stevens, author of Love and Loss of a Parent, to explore her deeply personal journey through grief, resilience, and healing. Sue reflects on her upbringing on the Central Coast of New South Wales, where her parents taught her the value of simplicity, gratitude, and finding joy even during difficult times. She shares how these lessons shaped her career as a project manager and leader, where her focus has always been on helping others feel seen, heard, and valued. Sue opens up about the profound experience of losing both of her parents within just 116 days and the emotional impact of caring for them through their final years.
The conversation delves into the ways Sue navigated loss, including her passion for ultramarathon running and completing a challenging 100-kilometre race as part of her healing journey. Through stories of endurance, the Camino de Santiago, meaningful signs from her parents, and the support of family and friends, Sue reveals how grief can evolve into growth and transformation. Drawing from the framework outlined in her book Grief, Healing, Connection, and Transformation, Sue offers compassionate insights for anyone experiencing loss. Sue’s powerful message reminds listeners to honour their own grieving process, embrace self-love, and remember that “you have to feel it to heal it.”
About Sue:
Sue Anderson-Stevens is a Master Practitioner of NLP and Time Line Therapy®, a certified Transformational and Grief Coach, and a passionate advocate for helping others
navigate life’s most challenging moments with courage and compassion.
After losing both of her parents within months of each other, Sue felt called to transform her personal journey of grief into something meaningful–supporting others to move from grief toward healing, connection, and transformation through her book, Love and Loss of a Parent.
With over 35 years of experience in leadership and project management, Sue brings a unique blend of structure and empathy to her work. An avid runner and ultramarathon
finisher, she believes deeply in the power of movement, mindset, and connection to support healing.
Sue lives on the Sunshine Coast, Australia, with her partner and is a proud mum to twin daughters. She is now building a supportive community so that no one has to walk through
loss alone.
Her definition of Self Love is: If I look in the context to loss, it would be to give yourself permission to grieve without judgement and allowing yourself to move forward when you are ready, and not when the world expects you to.
Her favourite quote is:
I would rather be the oldest person in the gym than the youngest person in the nursing home.
You have to feel it, to heal it.

Quotes:
Life was always full of love and laughter.
Not a day goes by that I don’t acknowledge that I had a very privileged childhood growing up.
They always made our childhood be the best they could in the circumstances that they had.
Everybody will bring something unique to the team, and if you are the leader, it is your job to find what that is.
I think making people feel heard and seen, is something that I really focussed in on.
The longer runs, I love because you just get to just tune in. It is like a meditation.
It is just being able to be lost in thought, in beautiful nature.
I want to do something that people go is hard. I want to do something not everyone can do. I want to do that thing that is outside the box.
One thing I love about the running community is a very supportive community, regardless of your age, shape, or condition. You are always welcomed in.
The best place to start, if you really don’t know, is park runs.
There was constant exhaustion and trying to manage lots of different things that I had going on at once.
I felt like I was constantly living in a survival mode.
They were the sort of people that didn’t ever want to be a burden.
I just knew that when I walked in the door at Mum and Dad’s, and when I walked in the door at my home, I had to be a different person to the person that was being the carer, the juggler of everything.
When I knew that they had given up the fight, then I knew it was time to prepare.
I was grieving the loss of my parents, even though they were still alive, and I just never thought that that was a thing.
I took the redundancy as a sign that was now my new job. It was to look after Mum and Dad.
I knew I would have my time. My focus was 100% on the job I had at hand.
The world was moving on so quick and my grief wasn’t.
Everyone’s hard is something different. Mine happened to be long distance ultra running.
If you can find your hard, something that you know is out of your comfort zone and it is going to take effort for you to do, then that is your hard.
If I could share my story, that could help other people, then it would be worth me writing that book, even if it just helps a couple of people.
I referred to myself as an accidental author.
I felt that it is my story, in my words. I wanted it to sound very much like a conversation. I wanted it to sound so personal.
This is about the community that I want to build and supporting people.
I really wanted to normalise the conversation about grief.
Grief is a place that you do need to visit, but it is not a place you want to stay.
The next version of you is waiting.
