Most business owners think they need more systems, a full restructure or to hire a unicorn when things aren’t going to plan with their team. Often it’s not a structural problem — it’s a leadership rhythm problem. So I’m sharing 3 small shifts that can have a bigger impact than one big change.Shift #1: Get Clear on RolesShift #2: Introduce a Weekly RhythmShift #3: Set and Share Expectations Out LoudThese changes are not just shifting what you do — you’re shifting how you lead. • What’s Your Boss Type (and why does it matter)?
Hello and welcome to Episode 269 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today we are talking about understanding your Boss Type.Understanding this is something that most business owners overlook… and it’s the reason so many people feel like they’re constantly fixing things, chasing people, and wondering why their team still leans on them for every little decision. The way you naturally lead — your Boss Style — is either helping your team step up… or keeping them stuck.Today we are going to unpack why knowing your style matters. Then I’m going to share the 4 Boss Type Profiles that I have developed after working with thousands of business owners and finally I’m going to share why I thought this was an important conversation to have. This is not about changing who you are. It’s about leveraging your leadership superpowers and filling the gaps.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? • Why You’re Still Doing Everything – Even Though You’ve Hired a Team
Hello and welcome to Episode 268 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In this weeks episode I’m chatting about why you might still find yourself doing everything – even though you’ve hired a team.We start by looking at the common misconception we have that more people will immediately reduce our workload. In fact the opposite can be true. More people can often mean more work when we haven’t hired the right people, for the right roles, and created the right structure. The key to having a business that delivers success and freedom to you, the business owner, is the right team (not just any team) and this includes the right team structure. When we get that wrong – we end up building a team which has a dependency issue – a dependency on us. And this can sometimes be exacerbated when we are a natural control freak. In truth, the real issue might just be us – not because we are intentionally sabotaging things, because this is new, this we need to learn, we are often modelling off poor examples, or big business – and it doesn’t work.We need to learn to lead our teams, we need to learn how to be a boss. How we show up to lead our people is everything – but so often we are flying blind – because there isn’t a playbook. So instead, we avoid structure and clarity because we think people want autonomy – and they do! But it’s a balance, our people also want to know what’s expected of them. The consequences of these patterns going unchecked, when your team are dependent on you - you become the bottleneck: and that leads to a negative impact on business growth, personal burnout, and poor team morale. It leads your team to feel micromanaged, and that stifles creativity, innovation, initiative – they end up being less autonomous, less productive and less willing to be solutions focused. So what’s the solution? It’s time to level up as a boss and leader. Create structure, provide clarity, become the ‘boss’ that your team want you to be.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? • The Power of Owning the Problem
Hello and welcome to Episode 267 of the People Powered Business Podcast!Today I am sharing a conversation I had with Juliet Robinson over on our Grow Your Influence podcast about the power of owning the problem as a leader in our business. We’ve all had that feeling when someone behaves badly: maybe if I just leave it, they will sort themselves out/the problem will just go away…Juliet and I talk about an example of a client who knew they needed to deal with a toxic person in their team but had been avoiding the issue. As soon as they decided to deal with the person, they felt so much better about themselves. The team’s morale was almost instantly improved and the manager gained so much confidence from realising their response didn’t need to be perfect, they just needed to need to do it.We talk about the importance of leaders being aware of boundaries, both personally and within the team, and tackling issues directly when people are pushing those boundaries. As managers we can feel overwhelmed when someone on our team is behaving badly and their negativity starts to infect the team. It can be tempting to hope that they will realise they are being unreasonable and start behaving better. The reality we talk about in this episode is that our team is watching to see how we deal with these things and whatever we do gives them signals about what’s ok. We will also feel better about ourselves when we deal the situation. If you find yourself in this situation, remember you just need to take small steps. Plan a first conversations and be clear about what you want to change. It is your role as a leader to deal with difficult people, both within and beyond your team, and you will feel better when you do this.An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team? • The 80-20 Rule and Your Team
Hello and welcome to Episode 266 of the People Powered Business Podcast! In this episode we are talking about the 80/20 rule and how it applies to your team. There are two sides to this coin.Firstly, are 20% of your people responsible for 80% of results in your business? Look around your team, who are you high performers? Who drive things forward? What would happen if they weren’t there? As your teams grow, you may find yourself here – where a small portion of your team are responsible for a lions share of results. They might not the doing all the things, but without them things will fall apart. I want you to check in, are these people getting your time, attention and recognition?Conversely, are 20% of your team taking up 80% of your time? The other way this shows up is in the opposite, where the bottom 20% are ‘problem children’ and they are taking up 80% of your time. You’re constantly training, mentoring, coaching, performance managing and course correcting. It’s exhausting right? So how can you adjust if you have one or both of these imbalances? That’s exactly what we’re chatting about in this episode. An InvitationWould you like to connect with other like-minded business owners, leaders and managers experiencing similar situations with their team?
