  • From First Bites to First Words: The Link Between Feeding and Talking with Stephanie Cohen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLC
#76: Did you know that feeding milestones can actually help your baby hit their speech milestones too? In this episode, I’m joined by Stephanie Cohen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLC, a speech-language pathologist, feeding therapist, and certified lactation counselor who breaks down the fascinating connection between eating and talking in babies. We’re exploring how responsive feeding, oral motor skills, and early mealtime experiences lay the foundation for communication. Stephanie shares practical examples of how everyday feeding moments, from mouthing to chewing support speech development, plus tips for creating positive, communication-rich mealtimes. Stephanie’s new board book I Can Say… Eat!, is designed to help families celebrate feeding milestones and foster language development through playful, baby-friendly interactions. Whether your baby is just starting solid foods or already exploring tons of tastes and textures, this conversation will help you understand how feeding and talking go hand in hand. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. What early feeding milestones - like mouthing and chewing - have to do with your baby’s speech development 2. Why responsive feeding supports both communication and connection at mealtimes 3. How to use simple mealtime strategies to help your baby build the oral motor skills needed for talking Shownotes for this episode can be found here: https://www.babyledweaning.co/podcast/76 Links from this episode: • Stephanie’s website Learn to Talk with Me https://www.learntotalkwithme.com/  • Follow Stephanie on Instagram @learntotalkwithme • Get Stephanie’s new board book “I Can Say EAT!” for your baby here: https://a.co/d/7WmgnWa • Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro program with the 100 First Foods™ Daily Meal Plan, join here: https://babyledweaning.co/program • Baby-Led Weaning for Beginners free online workshop with 100 First Foods™ list to all attendees, register here: https://babyledweaning.co/baby-led-weaning-for-beginners Other Episodes Related to This Topic: • Episode 428 - Mouthing Objects: What does this mean about my baby’s ability to start solid foods? with Marsha Dunn Klein, OTR/L, MEd, FAOTA • Episode 312 - 3 Easy Responsive Feeding Techniques when Starting Solid Foods with Stephanie Cohen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLC • Episode 306 - Picky Eating Prevention Tips with Stephanie Cohen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLC 🌱 🌱🌱🌱 🌱 Not sure about which foods to offer your baby next? • Baby Behavior at Mealtimes: What the Science Says with Tina Payne Bryson, PhD
#74: What is your baby’s behavior at mealtime telling you? Is it possible to spoil a baby by feeding him too much? Can babies even exhibit “bad” behavior? In this episode author, child development and parenting specialist Tina Payne Bryson, PhD is joining me to break it ALL down when it comes to your baby’s behavior at mealtimes - diving DEEP into what the science says! Tina is the co-author of well-known parenting books such as The Whole-Brain Child and No Drama Discipline (...aka the BIBLE when my quadruplets were toddlers and I had NO idea how to compassionately discipline!) I love Tina’s science-based approach to tackling topics and she’s covering a TON of baby behavior in her new book The Bottom Line For Baby. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. Why it’s basically impossible to spoil your baby...so don’t worry that your doting or your preferred method for starting solid foods is going to spoil your baby. It won’t! 2. How to connect and redirect when our babies are playing with or dropping food. Plus Tina also covers how these behaviors change during different stages of infancy. 3. How baby-led weaning helps babies develop “interception” - or the idea of what’s going on internally...so they’re learning how to recognize & respond to their hunger cues. • What to Do When Your Baby Won't Eat
#73: It is hard not to panic when your baby shows no interest in food. They ignore what you offer, barely taste anything, and you start worrying about nutrition, iron, and whether something might be wrong. This slow start is one of the most stressful parts of offering solid foods. The good news is that most babies take time to learn how to eat, and early disinterest is usually completely normal. In this episode, I explain why many babies ignore food at first, how to support them during this learning phase, what to avoid, and when it might be helpful to get extra guidance. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. Why it is normal for babies to ignore food at first and why you can stop worrying about how much they eat 2. When most babies start eating more and what to do if your baby is not showing that progress yet. 3. How to set up calm, consistent practice so your baby builds the skills they need to become a confident self-feeder.
