A: Why did you suddenly suggest a weekend party during the meeting when everyone looked serious?
B: I just wanted to lighten the mood, didn't think much.
A: You need to read the room — the boss was announcing layoffs at that moment.
B: I see, I completely failed to pick up on the vibe.

参考翻译：
A: 刚才开会时，大家都表情严肃，你为何突然提议周末开派对？
B: 我只是想活跃气氛，没想太多。
A: 你需要察言观色——那时老板正宣布裁员消息。
B: 原来如此，我没有察觉到当时的氛围。

⭐read the room
察言观色；有眼力见儿；看清形势 / 识时务；别不会看脸色；懂得看气氛

例句：

He just can't read the room.
他就是不会察言观色。

He is bad at reading the room.
他不擅长察言观色。

He kept talking about money when everyone was sad. He just can't read the room.
大家都很悲伤时，他还不停谈钱。他真不会看脸色。

He kept talking about his promotion at the funeral. He really doesn’t know how to read the room.
