The Deep Coach

At 24, Joel Monk was DJing in Manchester when he woke up one morning in tears. He realized he had lost touch with himself. Soon after, he sold his records and left for India.
In this episode of The Deep Coach, Joel joins Jonathan Hermida to explore what happened next—and the years of awakening, difficulty, and integration that have shaped how he lives and coaches today.
Joel is the co-founder of Coaches Rising, a coaching education platform that trains thousands of coaches each year and brings together leading teachers in human development and transformation. He also hosts the acclaimed Coaches Rising podcast and is a transformational coach whose clients have included media personalities, heads of banks, serial entrepreneurs, and Zen masters.
Joel shares an unexpected awakening experience in Dharamsala, the questions it left him with, and how he eventually found his way into coaching. He also speaks openly about a much more difficult period in his early forties—a dark night of the soul—and how the love of his family, support from teachers, and everyday responsibilities helped him through it.
Throughout the conversation, Joel describes how his relationship with the spiritual path has changed. He speaks about enjoying being himself, feeling more deeply, and becoming more available to the people and life around him. His ongoing integration has brought a simpler question into focus: Is he becoming more caring and generous?
